Connections

Can you quantify happiness?

Ok, I see your predicament. When were you happy last time? Called a friend? Had a lush dinner? Slept after a long time? Don't say Netflix binge is your favorite. (Not judging) Fine, you can lie that you gym and jog.

Mine is appreciation after I write an article. Mind you, it is not the only pleasure I am guilty of. Among many it is at the top of my list I can assure you. You know, it is not easy for policy student to write. Boring briefs, and white paper drafts ... yuck.

They do add flavor to the power corridors making changes in their own style. I like to play with the emotion as you read my piece.

Recently I wrote an article about Electronic City in Bangalore. Oh yes, I finally got a chance to do it. It is not easy to fire up the grill and cook a tikka as you desire. I fleshed out that baby drawing from my experiences of dirtiest underbellies of that city. The unsaid, ignored, cornered talk ... relax, it was just taboo that was written through and through.

Do you know? I am in class with an author, designer and business leader, haven't you heard of her, oho! Aparna Piramal Raje? No? Ah, man, you have to attend her class and sit alongside when she teaches. I did(on zoom). See, the thing is she put her finger on my pulse when she asked me to see this, documentary- oh such a pain, at first, but I loved it by the middle and was drooling by the end. You see that is one thing I love about cities. Urbanism, people and the politics of the design. It is phenomenal complexity. Humans love complexity and I thrive in mess. I see through the muck, filter through and identify the problem. Boy I did, when I saw the movie and then, I wrote a full five-hundred words within thirty minutes.

The best writing I have done in the shortest time till date. You see, I wanted to change the public spaces of a city. That is what I came for, and I still want to do that. No, not at all, I am not passionate about it, passion is overrated, and it fizzles out. I am madly and truly convinced about its necessity in public life. Oh yes, it is, you are right, a big a part of democracy, it can't be far from that principle. Any city, how hard it might try, cannot be democratic, truly if it doesn't have design that promotes public spaces.

Do you have a project for me ? let's connect.

PS: Netflix and the Art of Design Writing is a course taught at Anant Fellowship for Built Environment at Anant National University, Ahmadabad. I am auditing the course. I am Anant Fellow 2021.

If Teleportation Was Real

“The Portal Room” A Short Story by a Student In Germany Who Just Wanted to Hug His Maa Without Spending 400 Euros, and 12 Hours Chapter One: The Portal Room It had been raining all day in Gießen. Not the kind of rain that brings kids to the balcony or makes your mother yell from the kitchen, “andar aa jao, bimaar ho jaoge!” (“Come inside, you’ll fall sick!”). This rain was foreign. Cold. Grey. Silent. The kind that made homesickness louder, made your heart feel like a waterlogged suitcase. Arpit sat at his desk, staring at the open laptop. The cursor blinked at him, like a ticking clock, but the words wouldn’t come. His eyes wandered to the window. He imagined what his parents might be doing in Delhi. Maybe Maa was making chai. Maybe Papa was watching the news. Maybe the house didn’t even feel complete without him anymore. His phone pinged. A message from his sister in Düsseldorf. Didi: “You okay? Missed your call. Also, Maa said, ‘Bas ek baar uski shakal dekh loon toh theek ho jaaye.’...

Changing Fortunes

On second thought : A tweet from Musk shot up stock prices and changed fortunes. A tweet against Supreme Court in India shot up tempers and changed destinies. The effect of social media is temporal in real lives. When we favor one side that helps society then what stops us from adopting the other side of it ? We are not having a conversation on this currently. As a society we have failed to draw boundaries on the good and the bad, rather what side of each we can accomplish together for a balance

The Phone Call

Tring ! Tring ! After 2 seconds ... Tring ! Tring ! Tring ! The phone rang loudly but nobody picked it up. It had been lying like it had been last night. Alone, cold on the floor above the mattresses spread for a man to sleep. The man was the father. A father of two people both in adulthood, with a son and a daughter. The children and their mother and father all lived in a two bed room apartment. The apartment also has a kitchen, two balconies a staircase to lead any visitor up on to the terrace and down towards the ground floor. The phone in its standby mode lay peacefully in bliss on the third and top most floor of an establishment which is over 20 years old. It was bought after a lot of hard work and planning by the father to give a home to his two adolescents and more space to grow up. This home was not just a home. Although it was small but it saw a lot of developments in peoples lives. With people living in it and outside and using it to their fullest extent with cre...
